Will Carney Defend His Plan?

Ottawa, ON – Sandra Cobena, Conservative Shadow Minister for Treasury Board & The King’s Privy Council, released the following statement on the Conservative motion calling on the Prime Minister to present his plan to save Canadians money at the Standing Committee on Finance:

“After promising Canadians he would ‘spend less,’ Canadians are paying more, with the average family of four needing to pay $6,000 a year just to cover the interest on the mountains of Liberal debt. That’s why Conservatives have introduced a motion calling for Carney to present his plan to cut deficit spending, interest costs and taxes at the Finance Committee.

“After 11 years of Liberal government, Canadians are facing an affordability crisis with the highest number of visits to food banks in Canadian history and higher inflation, driving up the cost of food and fuel. Liberal debt, taxes and inflation have driven up the cost of everything.

“As families, seniors and youth are struggling to buy groceries, fill their gas tanks and keep a roof over their heads, out-of-control spending means the fastest growing item in the federal budget is interest on the national debt. In fact, the Liberals are projected to spend more on paying bankers and bond holders instead of nurses, hospital beds or supports for a vulnerable Canadian.

“Carney promised that he would be different by ‘spending less,’ but even by his own metric – deficit-to-GDP – spending is set to increase in 2027-28 with the Parliamentary Budget Officer finding he won’t meet his own fiscal anchor. It’s time for him to answer questions, starting with how the average Canadian family can afford to spend $6,000 in debt interest.

“Canadians cannot afford to keep paying for the rising costs of more Liberal government. Now is the chance for Liberals to express confidence in his plan to bring down costs and vote in favour of the motion to have Carney defend it before the Finance committee.

“Our workers, families and seniors have held up their end of the bargain and deserve an affordable life. Conservatives will never stop fighting to restore Canada’s promise and deliver a plan that will save Canadians money.”
